The Illinois Department of Insurance issued an order on Tuesday against Universal Casualty Co. -- based in Elk Grove Village and doing business in Illinois, Indiana and Missouri -- to pay a $200,000 fine and correct its claims processes immediately, according to a release from the department.

This is not the first time the state has issued an order against UCC. In January 2008, it was ordered to create and maintain improved claims investigation and resolution procedures. Spring storms cut into United Insurance profit

United Insurance Holdings Corp. reported net income of $2.8 million, or 27 cents a share, for the second quarter ended June 30, compared to net income of $9.2 million, or 78 cents a share, for the same period last year.

New business and improved policy retention boosted revenue, with total revenue of $26.3 million for the second quarter of 2009, compared to $24.9 million in the year-ago period.

But losses and loss adjustment expense also increased in the second quarter to $11.5 million, compared to $5.3 million a year earlier. The increase in losses and loss adjustment expenses primarily was due to a few large, non-routine fire losses that occurred in the second quarter and an increase in roof-damage claims that resulted from afternoon thunderstorm activity that occurred in May and June, a release from United said.
