Carseek.com Adds Comprehensive Insurance Section

California Offers Lessons on Insurance Exchanges

As Congress debates creating insurance "exchanges" as part of a health-care overhaul, the failure of a similar effort in California may offer important insights, former participants in the program say.

From 1993 to 2006, small businesses in California could buy health insurance through an exchange run initially by the government, and later by a nonprofit group.

Latest hurricane-related insurance suits filed in Jefferson County

A total of four new lawsuits against insurance companies over hurricane damage claims were filed in Jefferson County District Court during the week of Aug. 3 through Aug. 7.

The following complaints were filed:

Stephanie Alfred of 4950 Ada St. in Beaumont alleges Texas Windstorm Insurance Association denied her claim for roof, water, wind, structural and contents damages caused to her home after Hurricane Ike struck on Sept. 13. TWIA denied the claim after its Vice President of Claims Reggie Warren assigned IMS Catastrophe Services and adjuster Glen Scaggs to investigate. Alfred is represented by Gregory F. Cox of The Mostyn Law Firm in Beaumont. Madison County Circuit Court case number: A184-611.

Latonya Cheatam of 1031 Schwarner St. in Beaumont alleges Homewise Preferred Insurance Company denied her claim for roof and water damages caused to her property after Hurricane Ike struck on Sept.
